Lyme Disease - How One Tick Bite Can Affect Your Health

by: Sergey Kalitenko MD

Do you feel like something is going disastrously wrong with your body and nobody knows what the hell you are going through? You may be suffering from Lyme disease which is caused by Borrelia Burgdorferi and transmitted by ticks. One tick bite can be the reason of the disaster. But you may hardly notice it or even be unaware of tick bite because of its small size.
How long do you think it takes to recognize an new disease? 2 years? 10 years?
It took them 3 years to discover HIV disease; first observed in 1980 and recognized in 1983. So on average no less then 5 years sounds reasonable. Take a wild guess, how may years did it take for modern medical science to discover Lyme?
It was first medically determined as an illness by Reverend Dr. John Walker in 1764. It was 1982, when they found the bug itself - Borrelia Burgdorferi. And only then they confirmed, that it comes from the tick saliva. It took them 218 years to figure out what was going on. And they had modern equipment and resources.
How did it happen, that the HIV virus 120 nanometers in size was discovered 72 times faster, that the Lyme disease spirochete, which is 12,000 times bigger then the HIV virus - 10 micrometers in size?
If you look at it under the microscope, you will see snakes. The causative agent of Lyme disease Borrelia Burgdorferi looks like a snake, as well as syphilis. Somehow it was very difficult to identify those microorganisms that look like snakes.
Even though a lot of famous people, like Guy de Maupassant, Ivan the Terrible, Edouard Monet, Al Capone, Hitler, Mussolini, Cortez, Scott Joplin, Lord Randolf Churchill etc. were suffering from syphilis, it took them 419 years to find out what was going on. First time syphilis was described was in 1494: it was an outbreak among French troops, besieging Naples. It was 1913, when the cause of syphilis Treponema Pallidum was discovered. I was wondering why so many famous people were infected with syphilis. Were they promiscuous or were they getting inspiration from passion?
So what is common between Lyme disease and Syphilis, except that both of them are cause by snake like bugs? Why is it so difficult to deal with them? Because both of them are great imitators.
Do you think, if it is so difficult for scientists to identify Lyme, it is easy in the regular doctor's office? No, if you are not looking for it. However, if you are suspecting it then yes, it is easy.
Snakes are dangerous, sure. But if you know about the danger then you can protect yourself. If you see a snake approaching, you can run away or kill it. If you are bitten by it, you can always get and antiserum and eventually get well. But this is not the case when you deal with Lyme. It is poppy seed sized innocent looking tick, that bites you. Often you don't even know about it - not like snakes! The danger is not only because the tick is so small. It makes your skin numb so that you do not feel the bite. That is how smart it is. In fact, it is also a victim of the main problem - Borrelia Burgdorpheri. It is actually an pandemia among tics themselves: about 50% of them are infected. So if you are bitten by a tick, you have 50% chances, that is was infected. The scary thing is: besides Lyme you can get other serious illnesses from it like Babesiosis and Human Granulocytic Anaplasmosis.
Have you ever seen a bull's eye? That is how Lyme starts. First thing you might see what is called and described as a "bull's eye" lesion: the red ring with dark red sometimes indurated center inside at the tick bite site. Unfortunately it often goes unnoticed. Or you may never have rash.
Soon after initial invasion, Lyme disease starts to spread. It goes into the skin, causing rashes, muscles, tendons, joints, that causes pains. Also it goes into the heart and nervous system including brain. The result is devastating: you may experience myriad of disabling symptoms from dizziness, fatigue, depression, fibromyalgia, insomnia and palpitations to frank psychosis, heart block and paralysis.
Is there any remedy for this horrible disease? With the help of modern western medicine and with all its antibiotics there should be a remedy. And medical researchers came up with antibiotic regimens, that should kill the bug right away. It was the perfect time for them to declare victory. What they did not know was: Lyme disease would arise so many controversies and debates that even politicians would get involved. This almost never happened in medicine before.
So what seemed to be the problem?
If you buy a shirt or pants and you realize that it does not fit what do you do? You get another one or a full refund. Same thing happened with Lyme patients. Up to one third of Lyme patients were not getting better despite treatment. So they went to their doctors, saying, that additional treatment may be necessary. But antibiotics are expensive. So medical researches did 4 controlled double blind studies. Two of them showed benefits of long treatment, another two did not. So what did the official medicine do?
October 2007. The most respected US medical journal "New England Journal of Medicine" (NEJM) publishes the review, dedicated to "Chronic Lyme disease". Conclusion: not scientifically justified, no need for a long antibiotic treatment. But in 1999 the doctors leaded by Jarrno Oksi, from Turku University, Department of Medical Microbiology, Kiinamyllynkatu 13, FIN-20520, Turku, Finland, decided to really check what is going on and that is what they found: "We conclude that the treatment of Lyme Borreliosis with appropriate antibiotics for even more than 3 months may not always eradicate the spirochete (Borrelia Burgdorferi - SK) ". May be the reviewers from NEJM did not read this article? Or may be they did not think it was significant enough to change their minds?
Unfortunately that was not all.
Do you remember all your mosquito bites and pimples last summer? Of course not. 50% of patients could not remember a tick bite. Remember: it is like a poppy seed. About 50% of patients do not have typical bullseye rash or do not remember it. Therefore they were presenting with nonspecific symptoms, not suggestive of Lyme.
Sounds very simple: if you do not know what it is - get the blood test done! CDC recommends to do antibody detecting test called ELISA first, and then if it is positive, proceed with another antibody detecting immunologic test, called Western blot. What if the patient cannot make antibody? Or the genetic material is different from the local type, used to make the test? May be just the sensitivity of the tests is low?
What this means is: they may be testing you for Lyme, specific for your region, but you might get it somewhere else, which is different from they are testing for.
Think about it: if you have enough antibody to defend yourself, that can be detected, would you be sick? Much less likely, because your body is fighting. But what if your body could not defend itself? Cannot make antibodies to attack the bug? Or you produce too little? Then you get really sick, because you do not have a weapon to protect yourself. And the Lyme tests will be negative, so they cannot even officially diagnose you with Lyme. It is called seronegative Lyme disease. That is when you are really in trouble, because you are sick, but you tests are negative or equivocal. It is like being at gunpoint in front of the attacker. I wonder, how George W. Bush - the president of the United States - was treated, when he was diagnosed with what appeared to be Lyme in 2006? Was he getting 21 days of antibiotics, or for months? This is probably classified and will remain the mystery.
But why so many fights? Why they even had to make special laws in Connecticut and Rhode Island to protect doctors, who were doing what they believed was right for their patients - treating them according to their clinical judgment? Why nobody is so excited about how many days you may be treated for urinary tract infection, but everybody goes crazy about treatment of Lyme?
September 2006. North Carolina Court House. Unusual civil lawsuit was filed here. It was not a class action lawsuit against a large corporation we used to read about in the newspapers every day. It was just the opposite. A large health care insurance company Blue Cross and Blue Shield or North Carolina was suing a prominent doctor Joseph Jamsek, specializing in Lyme and HIV treatments, for a huge sum of 100 million dollars for insurance fraud. Apparently this doctor did not have a lot of money, because he had to go bankrupt. Not only because he could not pay 100 million dollars. Because he could not even afford to fight with the health insurance company. But what did he do? Did he steal money from insurance? No. Did he steal money from patients? No. Did he receive kickbacks? Not that they know of.
What he did was: he was treating his Lyme patients according to what he thought was right for them. He was treating his Lyme patients according to International Lyme And Associated Diseases Society (ILADS) recommendations. What the insurance company wanted him to do was to treat Lyme patients as per Infections Disease Society of America (IDSA) recommendations.
But what is the difference between two of them? Both are non for profit, both of them are made by doctors, both of them are not government branches. The difference is: IDSA recommended treatment is much much cheaper, then ILADS recommended. So which one the health insurance company prefer? And who do you think won?
But health insurance companies are not always that lucky.
2006. Connecticut. Attorney General's office. Mr. Richard Blumenthal is facing reelection in November 2006. This is the same Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, who was presenting himself as a Vietnam veteran, that did not match his military records as per New York Times. He is very well aware of the patient's rage because of insurances denial to pay for long Lyme treatment. He meets with the Lyme activists. This is not the first time he meets with them. In 1999 he initiated the hearings about insurance coverage for long term treatment for Lyme. At that time patients won. What about now?
Health Insurance companies denied payments for treatments because Infections Disease Society of America (IDSA) does not recommend prolonged treatment for Lyme. These recommendations are written by the IDSA panel of experts. And Attorney General Mr. Blumenthal looks for a motive. And here it is: 5 of the 14 panel members had undisclosed conflict of interests. Moreover IDSA had bias appointing the chairman, refused to accept the information about chronic Lyme disease, "blocked appointment of scientists and physicians with divergent views on chronic Lyme", etc.
You do not need more proof.
Despite evidence collected by Mr. Blumenthal, the investigation was closed in 2008 without any charges against IDSA. However, the IDSA promised to revise their recommendations for Lyme disease. And they issued their new recommendations in 2010. Do you think there were any changes? Not at all.
As per IDSA they spent close to 1 million dollars for revising guidelines and legal fees. I wonder where they got such a huge sum from? Who paid for this? Doctors? Somebody else?
But still live became easier for doctors and patients: in 2009 Connecticut and then Rhode Island passed the laws, protecting doctors from sanctions for long Lyme disease treatment.
What is the reason of such serious disagreement between to groups of Lyme experts: IDSA and ILADS? To me it is unlikely, that all the experts had bias. Because they became doctors to help people. This is the doctor's nature. Or may be the difference in opinions was used by health insurance companies to make more profit?
There is nothing wrong with the difference in opinions. This is human nature. It is like the difference between religion and science. Religion and Science have two very different views on things but the differences between the two of them does not mean, that either one of them is wrong.
Therefore IDSA has reasonable guide lines, based on the very strict Lyme diagnostic criteria. But ILADS makes a very strong point, that Lyme cannot be diagnosed by official criteria.
What if there is something else going on? May be it is not only Lyme? Or maybe we have a real problem with finding Lyme spirochete itself?
Look what the government is saying: according to CDC "During the 15-year study period, the number of cases reported increased 101%, from 9,908 cases in 1992 to 19,931 cases in 2006". And they are not trying to find out why?
Now forget about doctors and science, insurance companies and politicians. Use your common sense. How is it that in 15 years it increased 2 times? Did they start a food stamp program for ticks so that they could bite so many more people? Or may be they opened subsidized housing in the woods so that hungry ticks are now able to bite every person available? Not that I know of. It should be the opposite trend, because of awareness about Lyme. More people are using repellents, more people are avoiding woods, the government is deploying various measures. So is this silent epidemic a mystery?
Obviously there are no more ticks. Obviously there are probably less tick bites. The only plausible explanation of this rapid growth of Lyme is improving diagnosis. But if the growth is so fast, it means that our ability to diagnose it by lab tests are very poor. This is with all modern technology, Internet and supercomputers? Could there be one thing, that can explain Lyme elusive nature?
1684. Delft, Netherlands. All neighbors, customers and friends of the smart child of basket maker Antonie van Leeuwenhoek are amazed, how hardworking he is. Antonie is working days and nights to produce his invention - lenses. But what his friends, neighbors and customers did not know was: he was just pretending to be working. Because the secret technology of making lenses was very easy: he just put glass rods into the flame, pulled it apart, then put the small whiskers into the flame again. That is how he createed the small glass ball, which was in fact a high quality lens. He was afraid, that if everybody realized how easy it was, he would lose his business. But why did he make lenses?
To see what has never seen before - the bacteria kingdom. What he saw was so fascinating that he wrote to the Royal Society in London: "The number of these animicules in the scurf of a man's teeth are so many that I believe they exceed the number of men in a kingdom." What he was looking at was dental plague. What he did not realize was: he was the first man on earth who was looking at the biofilm. Do you brush your teeth? In fact what you are doing is - you remove biofilm from your teeth. What is this innocently looking monster?
Biofilm is where dangerous bacteria are hiding. They create a labyrinth of polymeric fibers on an appropriate surface with small holes and pockets, that are bacteria citadels. That is where they hide and cannot be detected by lab tests. That is where they cannot be hit by antibiotics. That is where they are waiting for better times to go out and hit again. That is why biofilms are so dangerous. Maybe they are rare and not significant in the everyday practice? In fact opposite is true.
Biofilms take place in 80% of all diseases. And Lyme is one of them. Lyme is not measles, not common cold, that is designed to hit fast and to spread to another person. Lyme is designed to live long time in the host - ticks, deers and may be humans. That is why it is so elusive. This is because Lyme is making biofilm and hiding in it! That is why sometimes it is not being identified in the blood tests! That is why it often does not respond to antibiotics! Want proof?
Dr. Eva Sapi, a professor of cellular and molecular biology at the University of New Haven, is doing cancer research. But suddenly she starts suffering from brain swelling. Clinically she had Lyme but her tests were negative. So she had to start her own research. What she along with Dr. McDonald found was: ticks bear other pathogens like mycoplasma along with Lyme spirochete. And they can be hiding in the Biofilms! I wonder why the revised 2010 year recommendations for Lyme disease management by Infections Disease Society of America (IDSA) do not say a word about such an important discovery. It was their expert's job to take this into consideration. Or may be they did not wanted to? What was the reason behind this? Looks like the experts of IDSA did not appreciate Dr. Sapi and Dr. McDonald's work. But the ordinary people did: they gave Oscar nomination for the movie "Under your skin" dedicated to Dr. Sapi and Dr. McDonald's work. They do deserve to be praised, because the fact, that Lyme is hiding in the biofilm can explain the treatment failures. So may be we should break the biofilm before treating Lyme?
Bottom line is simple:
1. If you were bitten by a tick and experienced rash - come for evaluation, because the sooner you get treatment - the higher your chances for recovery.
Even if you were not bitten by a tick, but had symptoms, suggestive of Lyme disease like rash, you may benefit from evaluation for Lyme anyway, because often tick bites are unrecognized.
Get better with Lyme treatment by taking antibiotics that hit the Lyme bugs in their hidden places, where they are hiding!

Penis Enlargement - Stretching Exercises to Increase Blood Flow for Penis Enlargement

by: Dane Bergen

Before beginning your stretching exercises for penis enlargement I advise that you find a private place where there will be no interruptions. Start by sitting down in a comfortable position with your back as straight as possible. You will need some lubrication for this exercise so I suggest you get some good lube or some baby oil.

The reason that this penis enlargement exercise is performed in a seated position is that it forces the blood into the lower abdomen and pelvic region which is what you want.

Take you penis in your hand and begin to stroke gently using your thumb and forefinger in a ring formation. The idea behind this exercise is to move the blood as fast as possible to the tip of your penis.

You should keep doing this until your penis becomes erect. You should continue to stroke your penis but at this stage you need to start squeezing harder. As you move harder you should start to feel the pressure of the blood building up in your penis. Continue to push the blood to the head of your penis and once you have a solid erection and have all the blood that you think you can take in your penis, you will then need to constrict that blood. You will do this by taking your thumb and forefinger still in a ring formation and placing them tightly around the base of your penis.

By doing this you will hold the blood in and this is what will gradually stretch your penis. The next stage of this exercise is to start stretching your penis to the left, right, and then forward. This will enlarge your penis even further and allow extra blood to enter it. Do as many repetitions as you until you think that you are ready to start really working out.

Remember do NOT overstretch your penis and if you feel any pain stop, take a break, and start again. This stretching should only be performed when you have your penis erect for safer penis enlargement.

Here's your penis enlargement stretching summary:

1. Sit down with your back straight and your flaccid penis in front of you.
2. Lubricate your penis and stretch it in front of you
3. Using one hand, apply pressure towards the head of the penis
4. Increase the pressure as you become erect
5. Stretch the penis to the left, right, ceiling, and floor
6. Repeat for as long as possible
7. Do not be too vigorous or over stretch the penis
8. Massage your penis when you are finished

Now that we have covered the warm up and the stretching routine for penis enlargement it is time to move on to some real exercises...

Early Hiv Symptoms

by: Julien Giles

What are the early symptoms of HIV infection?

Despite increased awareness about HIV, AIDS and the risks of unprotected sex, many people don't know what the early symptoms of HIV are. While the chances of contracting the virus are still relatively low, it's important to be aware of possible symptoms, particularly if you've recently had sex without a condom.

However, part of the problem is that around a third of people who contract the virus will not display any early symptoms at all. In fact, many live with HIV for years without realising that they are infected. Of course, the earlier the infection is diagnosed with an HIV test, the better the chances of treatment.

What does HIV do to the body?

HIV is a virus which, in its advanced form, can lead to the terminal condition AIDS (Acquired Immuno Deficiency Virus). It attacks cells in the body which fight infection – leaving you more vulnerable to disease. A person infected with HIV will not necessarily develop AIDS. By the late stages of HIV, symptoms are pronounced and can have a debilitating effect on the sufferer.

However, in its early stages, HIV is known as primary HIV infection. Symptoms usually appear a couple of weeks after exposure and may only last for a short time.

Early signs to look out for:

Early stage HIV can share many of the same symptoms as common conditions (such as the flu or glandular fever). The key is to work out whether you're experiencing any of the following symptoms following recent unprotected sex:

- Sore and dry throat
- Headache and high fever
- Feeling fatigued and lacking in energy
- Pain in the joints, muscles and lower back
- Feeling nauseous and having a low appetite
- Swollen glands (particularly in the neck and armpits)
- Rash on the chest and occasionally arms
- Diarrhoea

As mentioned above, although around 60% of people infected with HIV will show symptoms, many others will not.

Getting diagnosed:

If you suspect that you may have contracted HIV, don't panic. Your chances of infection are low – almost zero if you have been using condoms during sex.

However, if you're concerned, or if you show symptoms a few weeks after unprotected sex, then it's important to test for HIV (not the same as an AIDS test). If symptoms disappear after a few days this doesn't mean that you're all clear. Often people will experience the initial signs and then show no other outward symptoms until years later. By that time the infection may have developed in your body and become harder to treat.

Clinics such as Freedom Health in London offer HIV testing that can detect the virus as early as 10 days after infection. You can also find treatment such as Post Exposure Prophylaxis. This is a one month course of anti-HIV medication aimed at those who believe they may have recently been exposed to the virus.

Bad Circulation - Am I A Victim?

by: Doug Pare

There are millions of people around the globe taking treatment for bad circulation, and there are many others who suffer from bad circulation, but not aware of that. Most people ignore the symptoms or take it lightly and hence fail to diagnose it in time. When the person dies all of a sudden, then only others realize that he/she was suffering from bad circulation. This is why bad circulation is sometimes referred as a silent killer.
Bad circulation, in medical terminology Peripheral Vascular Disease PVD, is a medical condition which is somewhat similar to carotid artery disease and coronary artery disease. Bad circulation is caused when fatty deposits are accumulated in the inner linings of the artery wall. This accumulation results in the blockage of blood circulation. Bad circulation in arteries leads to the kidneys, arms, hand, legs, and feet. Most people who suffer from bad circulation may have fatty deposits in the arteries of brain and heart. This can cause the death of the patient from heart attack and stroke.
Bad circulation is considered as a serious condition and can result in heart attacks, loss of limbs, stroke, and in many cases even death. However if found in the early stages, bad circulation may be prevented or treated in the early stages with meditation, drug treatment, surgery, life style changes, or mostly a combination of all these treatments.
Some of the main symptoms of bad circulation are legs and or feet falling to sleep, cramping of the buttocks, legs, or feet, pain in the legs, swelling of the legs, tired aching feet; and very low temperature in your hands, arms, legs, or feet. If you feel that you have some or most of the symptoms then you may have been suffering from bad circulation. It is better to visit your family doctor and take a complete check up. Bad circulation can be diagnosed by a physical examination, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging angiography MRA, and X-ray angiography.
Some lifestyle changes which can help you to lower your risk include controlling diabetes, quit smoking, controlling blood pressure, and consuming low cholesterol diet. Bad circulation can be prevented to some extend by taking healthy fat free diet and regular exercises.
All we have to do is take a good look at the lifestyle we are living and it should be quite obvious to everyone why this is happening. First of all most people do not get enough exercise which is a crucial factor in allowing our blood to circulate properly. Bad circulation can lead to heart attack and strokes and if that is not enough all the fast food and fatty foods most people eat, only add to the problem.

Sebaceous Cysts Treatment Tips

by: Juliet Cohen

A sebaceous cyst is a closed sac under the skin filled with a cheese-like or oily material. Sebaceous cysts are commonly seen on the scalp, labia, scrotum, chest, and back, but can be found anywhere on the body. A foul odor is also often present in the substance called keratin which fills sebaceous cysts. Keratin is a protein that creates the sac of cells called sebaceous cysts. The bumps or lumps you can feel under your skin are actually the sac of cells. Sebaceous cysts are often the result of swollen hair follicles, or skin trauma. The scalp, ears, back, face, and upper arm, are common sites for sebaceous cysts, though they may occur anywhere on the body except the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. In males a common place for them to develop is the scrotum and chest.

They are more common in hairier areas, where in cases of long duration they could result in hair loss on the skin surface immediately above the cyst. The main symptom is usually a small, non-painful lump beneath the skin. Small lumps or bumps that occur just under the skin of the genitalia, breast, abdomen, face, neck, or elsewhere on the body are the most common symptom of sebaceous cysts. Sebaceous cysts may occasionally become infected and form into painful abscesses. It is important when sebaceous cysts are surgically removed that the entire sac is excised to help prevent a recurrence. large cysts may reappear and may have to be surgically removed. If a cyst becomes infected, treatment may include administering antibiotics and then surgically removing the cyst.

Surgical excision of a sebaceous cyst is a simple procedure to completely remove the sac and its contents. Total excision surgical technique removes the entire cyst and so prevents recurrence. Home treatment of sebaceous (epidermal) cyst, may relieve symptoms but may not make the cyst go away. Apply warm, wet washcloths to the lump for 20 to 30 minutes, 3 to 4 times a day. Inject an inflamed but uninfected epidermoid cyst with a corticosteroid to help reduce the inflammation. To minimize scarring use a carbon dioxide laser to vaporize an epidermoid cyst on your face or other sensitive area. Avoiding excessive sun exposure and using oil-free skin care products can help prevent milia. To prevent scarring and infection, don't try to squeeze cysts yourself.

Sebaceous Cysts Treatmen and Prevention Tips

1. Do not squeeze, scratch, drain, open (lance), or puncture the lump.

2. Keep the area clean by washing the lump and surrounding skin well with an antibacterial soap.

3. Apply warm, wet washcloths to the lump for 20 to 30 minutes, 3 to 4 times a day.

4. Avoiding excessive sun exposure and using oil-free skin care products can help prevent milia.

5. Prophylactic tetracycline or erythromycin ointment is applied once, 1 hour after delivery.

Quitting Smoking: Nicotine Relapse Prevention And Recovery

by: Joseph A Gaetan

According to a Statistics Canada report entitled A step Forward, a step back: Smoking cessation & relapse by Margot Shields " Relapsing was strongly associated with the length of time an individual had quit. Approximately 1 in 5 men and women who had quit smoking for two years or less had started again. By contrast, approximately 5% of former daily smokers who had quit for three to five years had started smoking, and among those who had quit for more than five years, the figure was 1%". Conclusion, the longer you stay quit the less chance you have of starting again. Understanding relapse prevention and recovery may help you to avoid relapsing or it may help you to recover quickly.
Instantaneous Relapse
Instantaneous relapse occurs when you start smoking because something unexpected occurs. The unexpected situation can occur while on vacation, in the midst of having a great time, or it can be during a new and unusual stressful situation. An example of this is where you are out with friends having a great time, maybe alcohol is involved and out of nowhere someone offers you a cigarette and you take one. Or you come home from work and find your pet is very ill and needs immediate attention. You remember you kept a pack in the cupboard and light one up.
Planned Relapse
You finally did it; you stopped smoking, got through the craving, withdrawal and habit stages and have been smoke free for some time. But lately and for no apparent reason you have been thinking about cigarettes. Then one day you decide to buy a pack, you know they aren't good for you, but you buy them anyway. In the back of your mind you have convinced yourself that by now you can control it or maybe you convinced yourself a few won't hurt or maybe you will be able to ration them and have a few at a time. You bought the cigarettes and now you are playing a mental tug or war game. Part of you say's don't do it; the other part says a few can't hurt. Finally you lose the tug of war and give in; you have the first one and all bets are off.
Latent Relapse Potential
Latent relapse potential is something you need to be aware of because it can sneak up on you when you are least expecting it. You just found out you are pregnant and you instantly quit smoking and can't believe how easy it was or you stopped smoking before you took a long vacation and you feel great about beating smoking. When something as exciting as a pregnancy occurs you can be so excited you stop instantly but the day after the baby is born some women find themselves right back at it wondering what hit them. The same goes for a long vacation or a hospital stay. While on vacation or in the hospital you didn't miss smoking. You are away from your normal routine and have been smoke free all along, you return home only to find everything was just as you left it. Knowing that latent relapse potential exists will help you to develop your reentry strategy after giving birth or returning from a vacation or a hospital stay.
Relapse Recovery
Relapse recovery is all about stopping again quickly. The sooner you stop again after that first smoke the higher the probability you will return to being smoke free. When you decide to have one you are at a fork in the road and you have a very important and timely choice to make. One fork is where you continue to smoke. The other fork is where you stop right then and don't have another one. If you happen to have one don't panic, don't give in and don't fall into the trap of thinking you can control your intake of cigarettes. Get right back onto that horse don't light up another cigarette and never look back, the sooner you stop again the more likely you will succeed again.
People who convince themselves that they will quit again some time in the future may find they are still smoking a decade later.
Relapse Prevention
When it comes to quitting smoking and relapse prevention an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. To protect yourself against relapse:
Expect the Unexpected
Mentally preparing yourself for unexpected or unusual events and situations can prevent you from relapsing. Weddings, family and school reunions, buck and does are events that don't occur everyday and are events that increase vulnerability.  If you are planning to attend one of these events just think ahead or back to what normally happens. At some point smokers will go out for a smoke and you need to have your personal plan in place before you get there. If someone invites you out for a smoke, simply reply, "No thanks I don't feel like one".
You can't control it
The tongue in cheek definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result. When it comes to thinking you can have one or that you can manage and control your cigarette consumption, you are deluding yourself. If you are smoking again after quitting you know this to be the case. Some people relapse because they start off with just one cigarette, thinking they can control it, but usually don't stop there.  Statistically the odds are against you controlling your smoking to one or two a day.
Get rid of cigarettes.
Your personal relapse prevention strategy should include getting rid of any remaining cigarettes and smoking paraphernalia in your own way. Some plan their quitting by getting rid of ashtrays, detailing their car or work vehicle and smoking the last one the day they stop. Some wrap their cigarettes in shipping tape so they can't get at them. Some bury them in the back yard. Do what feels right for you, but make sure you have a plan to say good-bye once and for all to your cigarettes, cigars or pipe tobacco and smoking paraphernalia.
Manage chronic stress
Sudden and unexpected stress can catch you off guard, while chronic stress can make the job of quitting smoking tougher. Chronic stress occurs where you have something, somebody or a job that is constantly causing you to feel uptight and maybe out of control. When it comes to chronic stress you have two choices, eliminate the cause or learn to cope and manage your stress.
Eliminating the cause is the preferred solution but is not always possible. Chronic stress can cause you to secrete cortisol a stress hormone. Normally a good thing, when cortisol is present over a sustained period of time it can be damaging to your health, compromise your immune system and can lead to serious disease. If you can't change the cause of the stress in your life you will need to find news ways to mange or reduce the effects of chronic stress to your body and mind.
Managing stress involves finding healthy outlets that allow you to temporarily get some relief. For some people this means going to a gym and working out the frustrations with weights and cardio exercise. Some people find yoga, or mediation will give them relief while other people turn to a new hobby or learning to play an instrument. Whatever you choose make sure you enjoy it.
If you wish to further your knowledge on managing stress several books on the subject entitled "The Relaxation Response" by Herbert Benson M.D.  and "Natural Highs" by Hyla Cass M.D. may help you  to understand and adopt new ways to feel good without cigarettes.

Hand Tremor – Causes and Symptoms of Hand Tremor

by: Corwin Brown

A tremor is an involuntary movement or shaking of any body part (even your head or voice may be involved). It is often most noticeable in your hands. Essential tremor is common in older people. Essential tremor is rarely present when the hands are not being used. It becomes most apparent when the affected person is trying to do something, like reaching for an object or writing. It is not caused by an underlying disease.

Tremors can happen at any age but tend to be more common in older people. You can develop a tremor from fatigue, stress, anxiety, or even rage. However, an ongoing tremor that is not associated with a change in your emotional state may be a sign of an underlying medical condition and should be evaluated. You may learn, as many do, that your tremors are perfectly normal, but eliminating medical reasons for the shaking is important.

Difficulty in making precise finger movements will necessitate enlarged keypads with rests, key-guards or delayed activation. Selection of key operating pressure may be critical to the avoidance of muscular spasm. Both audible and displayed key feedback will be necessary to confirm correct actuation and avoidance of unwanted repeats. Speech-input keying may be desirable, but some conditions giving rise to hand tremor also cause hesitancy in speech.

Causes of Hand tremor

Environmental factors: People with unusual exposure to herbicides and pesticides are more likely to develop Parkinson's disease than are people who don't have this exposure. Researchers haven't yet been able to connect a specific herbicide or pesticide to the disease.

Hyperthyroidism or thyrotoxicosis occurs when the thyroid releases too many of its hormones over a short (acute) or long (chronic) period of time.
Tremors caused by stress, try relaxation techniques like meditation, deep relaxation, or breathing exercises. For tremors of any cause, avoid caffeine and get enough sleep.

Half of the cases are due to gene mutation and transmitted dominantly. There are two main loci: ETM1 and ETM2. The rest are idiopathic. No identifiable and consistent structural abnormality has yet been demonstrated to exist in the nervous system of every person with ET.

Essential tremor is the most common form of abnormal tremor. Although the cause is unknown, new research shows that the part of the brain called the cerebellum does not appear to work correctly in patients with essential tremor. The cerebellum is the part of the brain that coordinates muscle movements.

Symptoms of Hand tremor

Rigid muscles: Muscle stiffness (rigidity) often occurs in your limbs and neck. Sometimes the stiffness can be so severe that it limits the size of your movements and causes pain.

The signs and symptoms of withdrawal appear between six to 48 hours after the patient "stops" drinking alcohol. Some of the most common symptoms include tremors, mild headaches, cold sweat, vomiting, loss of appetite, insomnia, restlessness, rapid pulse, anxiety and auditory hallucinations.

However, some testing may be done to rule out other causes of tremors, such as excessive caffeine or tobacco use, alcohol withdrawal, use of certain medications (for example, asthma drugs, lithium, certain antidepressants and anti-seizure drugs)

Physiological Tremor: This is a very-low-amplitude fine tremor (between 6 Hz and 12 Hz) that is barely visible to the naked eye. It is present in every normal individual during maintaining a posture or movement. Neurologic examination results of patients with physiologic tremor are usually normal.

Constant Back Pain Under Left Rib Cage

by: Steve A Madigan

Back pain under the left rib cage is a dilemma for all patients suffering from it. Any constant pain is viewed by doctors as a very serious disorder or disease and requires immediate attention and cure. The rib cage is a formation that is composed by the thoracic vertebrae and ribs, sternum-breastbone, and the coastal cartilages that links the ribs to the sternum. The term cage is defined as a structure to house animals. The rib cage is a similar structure which houses and also protects the animal heart and lungs, also known as a thoracic cage in medical terms.

In the chest-thorax region, nerves spring out from the spine and divide into two parts. The first part goes to just under the skin and further sends fibers to the surface and also travels around half way around the chest. This is a probable reason for the feeling of pain in the back to the side of the chest. The second part travels to the bottom of the rib around the sternum bone, and also surfaces to the skin and then goes back towards the side on the same level as the first nerve. Rib cage pain can be any pain or discomfort in the area of the ribs.

A fractured or cracked rib can cause rib cage pain, costochondritis, inflammation of the cartilage near the breastbone, osteoporosis and pleurisy. If you do encounter such ribcage you must first get the area x-rayed so as to determine if your ribs are fractured. In the event of a fractured rib an immediate surgery should be scheduled. If you've been suffering this pain for a long period of time (3 months or more) it's necessary to go for an MRI or CT scan and consult a professional to check for nerve damage, tumor or cancer.

Pain due to inflammation of cartilage between ribs and breastbone can radiate around the back and down the arms. Such type of pain could be enormous enough to give you a syndrome that you are having a heart attack or lung problems. Though this condition is benign but it is very painful and uncomfortable during the period it lasts.

There are instances when constant back pain under left rib cage makes you visit a specialist in gastroenterology since the problem starts with your stomach. Your stomach feels empty and you feel that a big growl wants to come out, nothing that you end to eat makes it better, you often get heart burn and a pain in the left side underneath rib cage. Routine blood pathology should be conducted to eliminate any infection of the intestine or pancreas. Digestive, gastro and bowel disorders must be ruled out by seeking medical advice. Such symptoms might make you start wondering that it is due to twisted bowel, you might have to go for a check up of colon.

Constant pain under the left rib cage is very uncomfortable for pregnant women especially those in advanced stages

Female Hormonal Imbalance

By: Corwin Brown

Hormones are chemicals your body produces to regulate various functions. They do so by sending important messages and signals to various organs and tissues. When they work harmoniously, your body behaves in a predictable way. But if there is too much or too little of any one hormone, then imbalance occurs and you can begin to feel that something is wrong. Wanted pregnancies don't happen, the discomfort of PMS makes the days before menstruation very difficult, or menstruation may occur irregularly or not occur at all.

To eliminate female hormone imbalance symptoms means you need to balance your hormones. Progesterone deficiency is the number one cause of having female hormone imbalance symptoms in most cases. During menopause, your ovaries stop ovulating, and the monthly production of natural progesterone ceases.

Hormone imbalance and hormone imbalance symtoms are caused by the primary hormones becoming out of balance. And you should know this hormone imbalance comes from changes in the reproductive cycle in women and fluctuations in hormone levels.

Symptoms of hormone imbalance are caused primarily by the incorrect relationship between progesterone and estrogen levels in the body. The two female hormones, estrogen and progesterone, exist in a delicate balance. Variations in that balance can have a dramatic effect on your health, resulting in symptoms of hormone imbalance. The amounts of these hormones that the woman's body produces from month to month can vary, depending on factors such as stress, nutrition, exercise and most importantly -- ovulation or the lack of ovulation.

Female infertility is often caused by a woman's inability to ovulate or release an egg. Failure to ovulate is usually rooted in hormonal problems. Fortunately hormonal imbalances are not hard to detect and treatments are straightforward and relatively effective.

The ovaries produce many hormones. Chief among them are estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. The ovarian hormones estrogen and progesterone interact to coordinate a woman's menstrual cycle during her reproductive years. The brain produces the hormones follicle stimulating hormones (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) which trigger hormone production from the ovaries. When any of the hormones coming from the brain or the ovaries are imbalanced, symptoms may occur.

Imbalances are most common in puberty and menopause, but imbalances can happen at any age. Several conditions are well known to be associated with hormonal imbalance including: polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, breast disease, and menstrual irregularities.

A diet high in estrogenic foods like meat and poultry products that are not organicly raised and have high levels of residues of hormones and other drugs. (Note: Many modern day livestock producers use grain that is geneticly modified and treated with pestisides to ensure a profitable outcome. This practice, though profitable to the farmer, is detrimental to human health, not to mention what it does over time to the health of the livestock.)

You can regain your hormonal balance naturally and holistically, right from the comfort of your own home. Our Personal Program draws on natural remedies that have proven successful for over 100,000 women to date. The program is tailored according to the level of symptoms you are experiencing. And we have a special plan if you're trying to get off HRT.

Hormonal imbalances can be present in women of all ages, with symptoms usually becoming apparent in a woman's late twenties through to her forties. In addition, most women experience symptoms of a hormonal imbalance during the premenstrual stage of their monthly cycle.

Does A Sauna Really Help You Burn Calories Or Is It A Myth?

Author: Amy Nutt
There seems to be a lot of controversy going around lately about whether or not a sauna will help you to burn calories and lose weight. Some people think that the whole thing is just a myth, and some people swear by it.

A lot of the sauna manufacturing companies will tell you that saunas definitely help you lose weight and calories, but this information is not as believable coming from someone who wants to sell you their sauna! Some of these companies' websites even have so called "doctors" who will answer any questions you may have about their saunas, but these people are employed by the company, and are still just trying to sell you their sauna.

Sitting inside of a hot sauna for any period of time will make you sweat. Sweating releases fluid from your body. The longer you sweat, the more fluid you will lose, and this fluid loss is really the only weight loss that you see from sauna use. Once you are done with the sauna for the day, it is highly recommended that you drink lots of water after you've cooled off. This basically puts the lost fluid right back inside of your body.

Many sauna companies boldly state that just twenty or thirty minutes inside of their sauna will burn anywhere from three hundred to one thousand calories. This is simply not possible. People are always looking for an easier way to burn calories than exercise, but exercise is the only efficient way to really get rid of calories. Sitting in a sauna for thirty minutes may burn up to three hundred calories, but this type of calorie burn will not have the same effect on your body as the calories burned during exercise.

Calories burnt off while sitting in a sauna are just calories burnt. There is no muscle building, no fat shedding, no after burn (VERY important!) and no muscle strengthening or toning. When you choose to burn calories through exercise, you not only burn more calories, but you also build and tone your muscle, and you get rid of the excess fat on your body. If you choose the right kinds of aerobics exercises, you will also get the added benefit of after burn. After burn is what the body does after you have finished exercising. After burn can burn calories up to fourteen hours after you have stopped exercising. If the only reason you are using a sauna is to lose weight, there are much better things you can be doing to achieve your goal.

Saunas are great for all kinds of other things though, and they can even help you to feel better about yourself. They will improve your skin, your health and your body. If they are used properly and safely, saunas will do a lot for you. I suggest using one at least two or three times a week, and I also recommend a good, weekly exercise routine for those who want to lose weight.
